These air fryer Sausage Pepper Poppers ($1.86 per serving) are inspired by the traditional jalapeno poppers and are gluten free. The combination of sweet peppers and savory sausage is perfect, especially for people who do not like the heat of the jalapeno peppers.
Gluten Free Sausage
Not all sausage is gluten free. If you need help finding a GF sausage, check out this detailed list. Many of these brands are available at major grocery store chains.
Pepper Poppers Variations
- If you like jalapeno peppers, you can use them instead of the sweet peppers.
- Pizza Poppers: Use mozzarella cheese instead of cheddar. Dice up some pepperoni and saute it in a skillet until it is cripsy. You can add other toppings like minced onions, chopped mushrooms, etc. Put a small amount of pizza sauce in the pepper before adding the cheese mixture.
- You can increase the amount of shredded cheddar or use another cheese, like pepperjack, to change the flavor.
- You can top the stuffed peppers with some breadcrumbs tossed with a little melted butter if you want some crunch.
- You can leave the meat out completely or change the sausage for ground beef or 4 strips of crumbled crispy bacon.
- If you use ground meat, try mix it with taco seasoning or some chili powder.
Pepper Poppers in the Oven
If you do not have an air fryer, put the peppers on a foil lined cooking tray and cook them at 425 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
